CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOLWHITTIER UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
The Guidance Office, College Cupboard and Expanded Horizons offices at California High School use the “A-G” requirements of the University of California and the California State University system when advising students who plan to attend a four-year college upon graduation from high school. These requirements are comprehensive and meet most major college requirements when passed with a “C” or higher grade. To be seriously considered for a UC and other highly competitive universities, students must earn grades of ‘B’ or better. Please remember that a class must be at the P (College Preparatory level), the H (Honors level) or AP (Advanced Placement) to satisfactorily meet these requirements. College preparatory courses are designated with a “P”, Honors level with an “H”, and Advanced Placement with an "AP" in the course title on schedules, report cards, and transcripts. A. UNITED STATES AND WORLD HISTORY - 2 YRS - 20 CREDITS
This requirement is met at California High School by passing two semesters of United States History and World Civilization at the college preparatory or honors level.
B. ENGLISH - 4 YRS - 40 CREDITS The following English classes at California High School meet this requirement. English 1 P or H 1 YR - 10 Credits English 2 P or H 1 YR - 10 Credits English 3 P or AP 1 YR - 10 Credits English 4 P or AP 1 YR - 10 Credits (Mass Media - a Senior English class is not College Prep) C. MATHEMATICS - 3 YRS – 30 CREDITS While 3 years of math are required, 4 years are recommended by most colleges and universities. Any three of the following classes meet this requirement. Please note that a student must earn a minimum of a “C” grade in both semesters of a course in order to move on to the next higher-level math course. Honors level math classes when taken for 4 years include Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Math Analysis and Calculus. Algebra 1 P Algebra 1 H Geometry P Geometry H Algebra 2 P Algebra 2 H Math Analysis P Calculus AP Probability & Statistics P Probability & Statistics AP D. LABORATORY SCIENCE - 2 YRS - 20 CREDITS Most Universities recommend 3 years of Laboratory Science, including one year of Biological Science and one year of Physical Science Biology P, H, AP 1 YR - 10 Credits Chemistry P, H, AP 1 YR - 10 Credits Physics P, H, AP 1 YR - 10 Credits E. FOREIGN LANGUAGE - 2 YRS – 20 CREDITS While only two years are required, the University of California recommends that you take three years of foreign language in high school. Currently, California High School offers instruction in Spanish, French, German and Latin. F. FINE ARTS - 1 YR – 10 CREDITS This requirement is met by passing 2 semesters of the same Fine Art class. G. COLLEGE PREPARATORY ELECTIVES - 1 YR - 10 CREDITS In addition to the above requirements, the student must pass two semesters of the following courses: Government P, AP/Economics P, H, Psychology P Math Analysis P, Calculus AP A 3rd or 4th year of a foreign language The UC system will count the 2nd year of certain Fine Arts courses to meet this requirement. |
